The awful legacy of the ‘War on Drugs’

As Bill Buckley — the godfather of 20th Century conservatism — argued long ago, the war on drugs has been an abysmal failure.

Not only has it failed to actually reduce Americans’ addiction to narcotics of every sort, but it has given rise to a slew of civil rights disasters at every level of government. As I wrote in my Sunday column for The Nevada Independent:

“… the enduring failure of the drug war hasn’t been marked merely by the rise of criminal empires, the proliferation of more dangerous narcotics or embarrassingly high incarceration rates. It has also been marked by a profound corruption of law enforcement’s understanding of what it means to “protect and serve” their communities.

Sadly, that’s a wartime legacy that will far outlive the absurd prohibitionist policies of America’s self-proclaimed drug warriors.”

Say ‘yes’ to sports, and ‘no’ to stadium subsidies

It’s simple: There are plenty of reasons professional sports teams should look to Las Vegas as a potential location for their new home…

Taxpayer-funded handouts shouldn’t be one of them.

As I wrote in my Sunday column for The Nevada Independent:

“If none of those benefits are good enough to woo the Oakland A’s [to Las Vegas] without some sort of ‘public-private’ corporate welfare scheme, then Vegas should be happy to pass on the opportunity and let [Oakland] continue raiding its own treasury for the privatized profits of a Major League Baseball team. As for this bustling city in the Mojave: We’ll get along just fine without another welfare-addicted sports franchise from Oakland.”

The virtue of ‘dark money’ in public policy

“Dark money” is an amazingly effective political smear…

And while Democrats have long whinged about “dark money” — political or issue advocacy that doesn’t have the same reporting requirements as traditional campaign donations — the GOP also likes to bemoan its influence when things aren’t going their way.

(For example, during the recent confirmation hearings for Joe Biden’s SCOTUS pick.)

But what’s the solution? After all, a world in which government compiles the names and addresses of individuals taking part in civic or social change sounds positively Orwellian.

As I wrote in my latest piece for The Nevada Independent:

It doesn’t take much, for example, to imagine the way certain local or federal government entities might have retaliated against supporters of groups like Black Lives Matter during the protests of 2020 — or even against those who financially supported efforts to protest things as mundane as COVID mandates. Given the institutional challenges facing most worthwhile social causes, requiring the financial advocacy of Americans to be cataloged and disclosed to a government run by a bunch of partisan opportunists seems… well, it seems tailor-made for abuse.

Indeed, government “being unable to track how citizens spend their money on civic and social causes isn’t a hindrance to our democracy.”

Cancel culture abounds…

In my recent column for The Nevada Independent I opine about the excess of political intolerance in our partisan era:

“Indeed, we live in a culturally censorious time, where one’s virtue is seemingly determined by who one chooses to vilify and malign, rather than any adherence to liberal principles — principles such as the basic freedom to voice stupid, absurd or even injurious opinions.”

At the risk of sounding too “both-siderist” here, I pointed out that the intolerance driving the so-called “cancel culture” isn’t something that’s unique to the progressive movement.

“To be sure, there is a contingent of the progressive movement that seems to believe anyone who challenges their ideological orthodoxy must be a fascist looking to revive the Third Reich, and should therefore be summarily deplatformed, shouted down or run out of the public square. However, such disdain for political opponents is not unique to the American Left. The political right has embarked on their own crusade against those who are outside their ideological tribe — and their intolerance for dissent has become just as profound in consequential ways.”

Moreover, the trends in modern politics — on both the left and the right — seem to be driving us toward a future where the basic concept of free expression is more imperiled than it has been in some time.

However, there’s a little bit of a silver lining… The mere fact that we are currently stuck in an absurd tug-of-war between increasingly intolerant and vitriolic partisan tribes is an indication that — despite their best efforts — neither extreme has yet managed to shut off the valve of free expression.

We’ll see how long it stays that way.
